Revealing the essence of bronze

Having made clay tiles for many years, we became intrigued by the possibility of casting tiles in bronze in 1995.

But we knew it was not enough to simply make bronze casts of patterns we had originally designed for clay. Instead, we set out to create new designs that would respond to the unique attributes of bronze:

Bronze darkens and mellows over time.
The high spots of a pattern brighten with use.
Bronze reflects light with a mysterious luster.
The texture of cast bronze reveals the turbulence of molten metal.
Hold a bronze ingot in your hands, and its sheer weight communicates its permanence.

Before adding a new design to the Bronzework Studio collection, we carve dozens of tiles. We consider them for weeks or even months, until we identify the tiles that resonate most deeply, the ones that we believe will be the most lasting.
